Photographer: Claus Peuckert. This is a very unusual solo piano session, as it took place in a Fazioli piano showroom in Copenhagen. Soren Kristiansen, primarily known as a swing pianist, changes his stripes into a lyrical minimalist for this intriguing session, performing thoughtful, lyrical interpretations of standards. He gradually works his way into the theme of "What Is This Thing Called Love," uncovering new possibilities within this timeless chestnut. "With a Song in My Heart" and "I've Got a Crush on You" are revealed immediately but prove no less enticing. "Jeepers Creepers" departs from the mold of this session, with elaborate uptempo runs darting in and out, suggesting the influence of Art Tatum. The pianist's originals also merit praise. "Tea with Art," dedicated to Tatum, is a harmonically advanced work that is descended from the standard "Tea for Two," while "Missing Link Blues" is an intricate theme that shows off Kristiansen's formidable technique. ~ Ken Dryden
