A major jazz pianist from Sweden who is not yet known in the United States, Ludvig Berghe stretches the modern mainstream of jazz. Though he may hint at others (such as McCoy Tyner and Thelonious Monk), he has his own individual voice which is particularly apparent on ballads. He contributes five originals to this CD and stretches out at length (the briefest number is 7:20 in length), building up his improvisations to an often intense level. The development on "Origo," which evolves from a quiet ballad to a passionate jam, is a highlight, and on "Knock Knock" he shows how much can be created over one chord. Bassist Lars Ekman and drummer Daniel Fredriksson follow Berghe closely, and the three often seem to think as one throughout this intriguing set. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow|
