ピエール＝ロラン・エマールは今年2007年に50歳を迎えました。それを祝って、2007年のルツェルン音楽祭では彼をスター演奏家（artiste etoile）として招き、数多くの演奏会を開いていました（開催中の9月9日には誕生日も迎えました）。これを機にかは不明ながら、エマールがいよいよDGデビューを果たします。デビュー・アルバムとなる本作では、彼にとって初のバッハ、かつ初のバロック作品の録音となる《フーガの技法》が採り上げられました。同時代音楽の代表的演奏家であるエマールが、対照的なバロックを演奏するというのは興味深いですが、《フーガの技法》という複雑で一筋縄ではない作品を選ぶところがいかにもこのピアニストらしいところ。
この作品には、バッハの亡くなった直後の1751年と翌1752年に出された2種の出版譜があり、それらにはこれまでにさまざまに研究が重ねられています。その中で、エマールは今回の録音に際し、新バッハ全集の楽譜ではなく、バッハ・アルヒーフ・ライプツィヒ本部事務局所長を務めるクリストフ・ヴォルフが1987年に編集した両版の内から、52年版＝後期稿を用いて演奏している点も注目。
エマールは来年2008年の7月に来日が予定されているので、その際に、《フーガの技法》が聴けるかも？今から、このアルバムで聴き込んでおけば、コンサートもより深く楽しめること請け合い！ ［コメント提供；ユニバーサルIMS］
