Discovered nearly 60 years after it was recorded, this pristine live set finds the Duke Ellington Orchestra firing on all cylinders. While the band had experienced a postwar dip in its U.S. popularity from which it wouldn't recover until after its appearance at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, it was still regarded with awe in Europe. With a lineup composed of such jazz legends as the drummer Sonny Greer, the saxophonist Harry Carney, and the trumpeter Ray Nance, the veteran orchestra swings its way through such classics as "Creole Love Call," "Take the A Train," and "The Jeep Is Jumpin'" with astonishing verve and energy.
