The second album from singer/guitarist Kit Holmes largely picks up for where she left off on her debut. There are catchy adult pop songs like "Happen Twice" and "It's Over," which are both sparer than they seem (a testament to some economical arranging). The instrumentals -- "My Sweet Blues," "Before You Came," "Catch the Echo," and "Too Far Away" are atmospheric, but don't capture the full range of her ability on the acoustic guitar (she's actually a world-class player), although the last comes closest with some delicate, filigreed finger work over the atmospherics. Bassist Danny Thompson adds his very individual magic to "It's Over," the moody "No Me No You," and "Who Says," which is deliciously breathy. Holmes' voice has developed, being less of a take it or leave it proposition than on her first album, cushioned a bit more by backing vocals. It's still not the easiest instrument in the world, but it's tempered to fit the excellent material. With no filler, she does get to show both sides of her ability here, and it's a definite step ahead for her. ~ Chris Nickson|
