here's a point where revivalism becomes almost too tasteful and Pig & Dan have found it. Though the two have been working together for almost a decade, it's curious that on their full-length debut they are looking back even further -- there's something about Imagine that could almost be the work of Jam & Spoon or, maybe, Hardfloor. It's a classic case of technical ability being on full display throughout but the end results being something that almost soothes or meets expectations rather than upsets them or otherwise twists them around. Moments like the build-in for the opening "Sweet September" or the hints of Microhouse precision that crop up at many points, most notably on "K-OS," help liven things up in general for Imagine, but otherwise this is a functional album rather than a remarkable one. ~ Ned Raggett|
