Bootsy Collins closed out a spectacular decade with 1979's THIS BOOT IS MADE FOR FONK-N. With both Parliament-Funkadelic, and as a solo artist, Bootsy was one of the key figures of funk in the '70s, and THIS BOOT, a non-stop collection of hard, ferocious funk jams, shows why. Opener "Under the Influence of a Groove" indicates the album will take no prisoners, a promise followed up with sizzling tracks such as "Bootsy Get Live" and "Jam Fan (Hot)." While there's not as much variation here as on other Bootsy solo outings (there's a complete dearth of Bootsy's slow-groove ballads, for example), the funk is kept at such a consistently high pitch (thanks in part to Bootsy's stupendous band, which includes numerous fellow P-funkateers) that it's hard to complain.
