rsonnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Donald Bailey (drums).
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 25, 1960. Includes liner notes by Del Shields.
Abetted by the smooth tenor sax stylings of Stanley Turrentine (whose rich stream of sound and beautiful tone recall Lester Young) and Kenny Burrell's expressive guitar work, Hammond master Smith gives full reign to his superb technique. The title track establishes the cool, soulful atmosphere that pervades the album, augmented by an insistent groove. The Turrentine original "A Subtle One" showcases the tenor's talents which lend themselves particularly well to the song's deep, eloquent phrases. Smith swings hard on gems from the jazz cannon like Parker's "Jumpin The Blues" and Basie's "One O'Clock Jump," his right hand flying over the keys to unfold dazzling, syncopated lines. The ensemble interaction that provides MIDNIGHT SPECIAL's seamless ambience, and the rotating spotlight which reveals the musicians' impressive individual talents reach a synthesis here that is powerful and appealing.
