pparently the Swedish had rec rooms and big, airbrushed vans in the 70s, too. At least, that's the impression one gets from listening to Witchcraft's THE ALCHEMIST. The band clearly worships at the altar of Sabbath and lesser American deity Pentagram, sharing both acts' penchant for down-tuned, bluesy heaviness. While their previous two albums were basically pitch-perfect period pieces of 1970 proto-doom metal, however, THE ALCHEMIST shows them stretching out ever so slightly to avoid the inevitable pigeonholing that could occur. Aspects of garage rock and potent strains of psychedelia run through songs like the otherwise metallic "If Crimson Was Your Colour," and opener "Walk Between the Lines" is cleaned up enough to pass for radio-ready power pop. That's not to say these guys have abandoned their bell-bottoms just yet. Both "Leva" and the molasses-slow "Hey Doctor" are classic bong-smoked hard rock.
