The soundtrack to a 1970 documentary about Joan Baez and her then-husband, imprisoned draft evader David Harris--also the subject of 1969's DAVID'S ALBUM--CARRY IT ON primarily features impassioned live solo renditions of Baez performances at various rallies and benefit concerts. Most of the songs are covers, ranging from Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" and Gram Parson's "Hickory Wind" to protest standards like Tom Paxton's "The Last Thing On My Mind" and Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released," alongside an opening singalong of the Edwin Hawkins Singers' "Oh Happy Day." Between many of the songs, interview snippets with Harris and Baez put forth sound bites of their political beliefs, which are very much of the time and, perhaps inevitably given the forum, a little simplistic. Several decades on, CARRY IT ON can't help but sound rather dated, but it's an interesting time capsule of a particular time and place in the folk music scene.
