Though Finnish cult heroes Circle have been purveying an angular, Krautrock-influenced brand of avant/post-rock since the mid 1990s, their 2007 album, KATAPULT, switches things up, leavening the Can and Guru Guru flavors with a distinct doom metal influence. Deep, growling vocals and thick, distorted, downright evil-sounding guitar riffs abound. Longtime fans shouldn't be dismayed, though; it's not as though Circle has become a Celtic Frost tribute band. Those crunchy guitars and scary vocals still share space with the neo-psychedelic textures, Neu!-like rhythms, and avant-garde sensibilities that have come to define the Circle sound.
