SONGS FROM PURGATORY consists of 53 tracks committed to a beat-up four track by hook or crook in the mid-90s in Grand Forks, South Dakota by June Panic. The tapes--actually submerged in water during a late '90s flood--have been painstakingly cleansed and saved, revealing nothing short of a lo-fi songwriting genius at the peak of his powers in a music scene that barely existed. Had SONGS FROM PURGATORY found the light of day when they were recorded, June Panic would be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Lou Barlow, Bill Callahan, and Beck in terms of lo-fi pop mastery, as he tackles everything from Skip Spence-ish folk drones and swirlingly distorted guitar workouts to Midwest power pop and country stomps. Fortunately, this three-disc collection captured it all and subsequently it's become the highlight of the June Panic catalog.
