By the time Finnish band Amorphis--former kings of speed metal-- recorded this eighth album in 2007, their sound had evolved into melodic, bass-heavy metal that draws inspiration from grunge, pop, and symphonic rock. The songwriting on SILENT WATERS is top-notch and shows a marked improvement from even their 2006 entry, ECLIPSE. The highlight here is the title track, an exhilarating power ballad with a haunting piano intro and convincing vocal by lead singer Tomi Joutsen (replacement for long-standing vocalist Pasi Koskinen, who left the band prior to this album).|
