Zap Pow were one of Jamaica's best-respected reggae groups in the '70s; they played roots reggae that was informed by jazz and American R&B as well as their Jamaican peers, and their horn section was widely regarded as the best on the island (Bob Marley recruited their brass players to join him in the studio and on the road in 1976). While Zap Pow never rose to international stardom, they cut a number of fine albums that reflected the group's strong instrumental skills and knack for sinewy melodies. Last War: The Best of Zap Pow '72-80 brings together 18 songs from the group's tenure with Trojan Records, and is a fine sampler of the group's work, combining the feel of reggae's first golden age with a sophistication that set them apart from many of the major acts of the day. ~ Mark Deming|
