17世紀、バロック真っ盛りの時代に活躍したパーセルは、幼少の頃から音楽的才能を発揮し、18歳で王室弦楽団の常任作曲家の地位にまで上り詰めたイギリスを代表する作曲家の一人です。36年の短い生涯に教会音楽や器楽合奏曲、劇音楽など約40曲を残していますが、中でも英語による声楽曲に彼の本領が発揮されているといえるでしょう。このアルバムにはパーセルの代表的な歌曲16曲を収録。カークビーの天使のような美声は、まさにこれらの作品にふさわしく、ルーリーとホグウッドの格調高く品格のある通奏低音も、繰り返しの多い部分も微妙に変化をつけ、素晴しいサポートを行っています。　［コメント提供；ユニバーサルIMS］
