Personnel: Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone), Michel Petrucciani (piano), Dave Holland (bass), Ed Blackwell (drums). This 1992 outing by Joe Lovano displays the musical maturity and compositional skill of the acclaimed tenor saxophonist. On FROM THE SOUL, there are fabulous performances rendered by each member of Lovano's quartet, which is no surprise given the all-star lineup. Pianist Michel Petrucciani stands out as usual; his hard-swinging solos show off his technical virtuosity and harmonic inventiveness. Bassist Dave Holland's lucid solos on "Evolution" and "Portrait of Jenny" are also quite amazing, as is his overall interaction with drummer Ed Blackwell. Lovano himself shines throughout, as he carefully blends together bebop with a dash of the avant-garde on all 10 tracks. It is this coalescence of genres that makes this album such a compelling listen. The best example of this fusion of styles is "Modern Man," a Lovano composition that is performed as a sax-and-drums duet. Other highlights include the angular "Lines and Spaces" and the group's delicate version of John Coltrane's classic "Central Park West."

商品の紹介

Entertainment Weekly (10/23/92, p.65) - "...With poised quartet performances and empathetic duets, FROM THE SOUL shows that Lovano is one of the still-flowering greats on his instrument..." - Rating: B+ Q (11/92, p.112) - 3 Stars - Good - "...the controlled energy of the whole session bespeak[s] a man in his prime..." Down Beat (9/92, p.36) - 4.5 Stars - Very Good Plus - "...[Lovano is] living proof that experience is the best teacher....a well-rounded postbopper for whom free jazz is simply a logical outgrowth of tradition; but he's more introverted and eclectic, smoothly melding genres from swing to fusion..." Option (Nov.-Dec./92, p.126) - "...Lovano plays with a listenable, full tone, a seemingly endless supply of improvisational ideas, and an authoritative sound of his own...Lovano is helped immeasurably by a remarkable band..." Musician (11/92, p.106) - "...Lovano's hard/soft tenor lines create a mature, enthralling persona. Simultaneously driving and drifting, they divulge Lovano's musical inheritance and his emotional largesse..." Village Voice (11/3/92, p.89) - "...He just gets better and better...Dave Holland and Ed Blackwell form as supple a rhythm team as any soloist could wish for..." - Rating: A
