BLUE BREAKBEATS is a compilation of tunes from six albums by alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, spanning the years 1963-1970. "Minor Bash" recalls the older hard-bop tradition, avoiding "straight 8ths" and instead embracing a swing feel. However, this track is still very blues-oriented, and the solos never fall into any kind of esoteric or post-modern vein. Drummer Idris Muhammad also gives this tune a subtle backbeat by simulating a conga drum rhythm. Other selections, "Pot Belly" in particular, fall back on funk grooves. Here Donaldson and company clearly draw more from soul and R&B than any other genre. They also exact the vibe of these styles very well, proving that post-Swing-Era jazz isn't just about intellectual stimulation or contemplative listening. This is easy-going, entertaining music that is equal suited for the living room or the dance floor.
