The Dixie Dregs must have been an awfully tough band to market back in the day. As their name suggests, country was a main part of their sound. However, with elements of rock, jazz, and even new age mixed in (not to mention that they were an all-instrumental band), you had a recipe for a record company's nightmare. But that is exactly why the group is still admired to this day by those who appreciate technically demanding music, and the double-disc set Dregs certainly has its share of outstanding playing. However, don't be fooled into believing that this is an expansive career overview of the band, as it focuses solely on the group's three albums for Arista Records during the early '80s (1980's Dregs of the Earth, 1981's Unsung Heroes, and 1982's Industry Standard). And while you'll certainly be receiving a healthy helping of Dregs, don't expect to hear all three albums in their entirety, either, as the first two releases are indeed featured from beginning to end, but the third album is missing a track, and is incorrectly sequenced when compared to the original. That said, judging from such standouts as "Road Expense" and "Rock & Roll Park" (the Dregs' rock side), "Pride of the Farm" and "I'll Just Pick" (the Dregs' country side), and "Hereafter" and "Old World" (the Dregs' mellow, new agey side), you'll have all of the Dixie Dregs' stylistic bases covered. ~ Greg Prato
