Roots revivalist Corey Harris continues his ambitious exploration of musical history with ZION CROSSROADS, a project that finds Harris immersed in the rhythms and consciousness of traditional roots reggae. Unlike Harris's previous efforts, however, which blend country blues with jazz, Americana, and African styles, ZION CROSSROADS sticks closely to its genre, riding deep, dread rhythms in a manner that recalls Burning Spear and Black Uhuru. The exceptions are the African-inflected "Walter Rodney" and the straight country tune "Plantation Town." The overall result is a satisfying, groove-driven album heightened by a political consciousness that will appeal to Harris fans as well as to classic roots reggae enthusiasts.
