Rasputina's OH PERILOUS WORLD refines and extends singer, cellist, lyricist, and leader Melora Creager's dark-hued mix of gothy 4AD Records-style dream pop and 1970s progressive rock into perhaps her most personal and emotional album yet. Like many albums of its time and place, OH PERILOUS WORLD can be read as a commentary on the Iraq War, the general spectre of terrorism, the misery of Hurricane Katrina, and other worries of the day. Uncharacteristically, Creager's lyrics are intimately entwined with public thought, politics, and moral questions on songs like "Child Soldier Rebellion," "Incident in a Medical Clinic," and the two-part "In Old Yellowcake." Indeed, sometimes Creager sounds like she wrote the lyrics almost verbatim from the daily paper. Underneath, her trademark dreamy/spooky carnival-like tunes shiver underneath her alluringly chilly voice, making OH PERILOUS WORLD a worthy successor to Rasputina's earlier work while exploring new arenas.
