This is part of Blue Note's Blue Brazil series.
Featuring some artists heard on the equally fine first volume, Blue Brazil, Vol. 2 spotlights the country's fertile musical output from 1964-1975. The majority of tracks here are vocal bossa nova or samba numbers, many framed in top-drawer jazz arrangements. Plenty of tasty horn charts, electric piano, and percussion crop up on infectious cuts by Milton Banana ("Ladeira Da Preguice"), Silvio Cezar & Meirelles ("Sambo Do Carioca"), and Leny Andrade ("Estamos Al"). Standout vocal performances are turned in by Elza Soares, including her stellar version of the Jorge Ben classic "Mas Que Nada," while fine instrumentals are contributed by Quinteto Villa Lobos and Som Tres. The relatively modern style of '70s tropicalismo (a rock meets bossa nova and beyond hybrid forged by Milton Nasciemento and Caetano Veloso) is taken up in fine fashion by Quarteto Em Cy and Di Melo, with the more experimental side of the genre (Tom Ze, Os Mutantes) being represented by Edu Lobo's Ligetiesque, choral bossa nova "Libera Nos." Add the dancefloor extravagance of a Bahian rhythms and synthesizer workout of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (sure to be on Meco's Disco Brazil Classics) and the prevalence of Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66-inspired vocal harmonies, and you have an excellent collection. One of the best and most unique compilations of Brazilian music available. ~ Stephen Cook
