Hard bop, ballads, and assorted Afro-Caribbean swingers swirl into CONTACT!, the fifth smokin' release by Ray Barretto and his New World Spirit ensemble. This is a dynamic and energetic new offering of jazz con clave. The moods range from the mysterious to footloose, illuminating the driving power of the group's improvisations and arrangements. And what better to lay the foundation than conguero Barretto's masterful playing? Trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman's enigmatic figures give way to sweet-sounding familiarity on Nat Simon's "Poinciana," which on the whole retains its quiet, clement character with an added Latin swing. The Ellington staple "Caravan" takes on an epic quality here, a strange and interesting Moroccan sojourn to Nueva York with Adam Kolker blowing a piquant soprano narration. The pervading 4/4 meter of the first few tunes halts at the metrical and melodic angularity of "Point of Contact (Punto de Contacto)". CONTACT! finds this ensemble really crystallizing as a jazz band with its own great sound.
