Alto saxophonist Loren Stillman's seventh release as a leader features eight demanding originals that push the envelope toward free jazz while maintaining a degree of accessibility. With terrific support form bassist John Hebert and drummer Take Toriyama, Stillman's adventurous flights on his instrument suggest the influence of altoist Lee Konitz and tenorist Sonny Rollins among others, while the lack of piano or guitar gives him a greater degree of freedom for his explorations. Highlights include the haunting "Sonic Boom," the eerie "Sticks & Stones" and the well-named extended work "All Over the Place," the latter featuring a compelling solo introduction by Hebert. This is a promising session by a jazz musician clearly deserving of wider recognition. ~ Ken Dryden|
