Arranger: Harrison Calloway, Jr. The general perception is that soul music peaked as a form in the late '60s and then morphed into the endlessly changing American musical landscape, but don't try explaining this to New Orleans producer Senator Jones, whose Hep' Me Records has been turning out what Jones terms "Southern soul" for a couple of decades now. And what exactly is Southern soul? Well, give a horse some stripes and you probably will call it a zebra, and for all explanatory purposes, Jones produces well-recorded soul, pure and simple, and it's stuff that wouldn't sound very much out of place if it had been released 40 years ago. This sampler features some of the more blues-inflected material Hep' Me has issued, including Sorrento Ussery's stirring "Party to the Break of Dawn," Cadillac George Harris' ominous "Feel Like Breakin' Up Somebody's Home," the even more ominous "Pistol, Knife, and Razor Too" by Sweet Miss Coffy (who doesn't sound like she's so sweet at heart on this one), and George Jackson's haunting and remarkable "Strugglin' Lady," a song that deserves to be deemed a classic. Forget the idea that this is a nostalgia ride, because this is living, breathing soul music in all but a historical definition. ~ Steve Leggett
