Tenor saxophonist Frank Foster occupies an interesting niche in jazz history: he was a featured player in a classic big band, namely Count Basie's in the 1950s and early '60s, yet he also played progressive, free-edged hard bop on his own and with Elvin Jones. On MANHATTAN FEVER, originally issued in 1968, both worlds intertwine joyfully. A showcase for Foster's arranging and composing talents, FEVER brims over with exhilarating, surging, and imaginative large-group jazz. As a bonus, this set includes previously unreleased material recorded in 1969.
