Except for Horace Silver, no other artist put out more material for the Blue Note label than Grant Green. So much so, in fact, that his BEST OF collection spills over into two volumes. This second collection gathers some choice cuts from Green's later period. It was during this time, 1969-1972, that Green made his mark in the soul-jazz arena, playing simple tunes with funky grooves to highlight his soulful guitar work. Often Green would cover pop tunes like James Brown's "Ain't It Funky Now" or the timeless "Sookie Sookie," both later becoming sample favorites among the DJ crowd. More subtle works were also in Green's arsenal, too, as keyboardist Neal Creque's meaningful ballad "Cease The Bombing" and the jovial "Cantaloupe Woman" prove here. For shear production value, though, Green's reading of "The Final Comedown" remains his late-period masterpiece of raw, funky power. In all, this second volume provides an even more complete picture of Green's staggering contribution to Blue Note.
