riginally recorded in 1977, this set by the esteemed British folk family, accompanied by the equally well-regarded Martin Carthy, is a sampler of some of the lovely old hymns that have fallen into obscurity over the past two centuries, kept alive in remote corners of the British and American countryside by rural and religious communities. The Watersons' rough-hewn harmonies and these songs' ancient origins combine to make listening to pieces like "The Bitter Withy", which features a vengeful child Jesus punishing upstart young members of the gentry, and the equally venerable hymn "Emmanuel", a magical experience even for those with few religious inclinations.|
