Photographer: Dexter Browne. Issued nearly three years after the death of Rick James, DEEPER STILL presents tracks that the funk legend had recently completed at the time of his death in 2004. While there are no raucous "Super Freak"-like tunes on this outing, the album does feature James in charmingly pensive R&B/soul mode, as best revealed on the smooth title song and the jazzy "Sapphire." It's sad to think that this might have been the start of a big comeback, but, regardless, DEEPER STILL, with its gentle, easy-going arrangements, is a fine way to remember James.

”King Of Punk Funk”ことRick James。2004年8月に逝去した彼が生前録音したラスト・アルバムが遂にリリースとなりました。当初『Forever』というタイトルの予定でしたが、タイトルおよび内容も若干変更があったとのことです。

2004年にこの世を去った御大によるラスト・アルバムがようやくリリースされた。全体のテイストはアーバンであり、力強くも艶のある歌声が堪能できる内容。なかでもジョニー・ギルとハワード・ヒューイットをフィーチャーしたブラコン風味の絶品スロウ“Do You Wanna Play”が素晴らしい。数曲ある軽妙なファンク・チューンでは往年のキレを魅せるが、その姿を想像するにつけ、ファンク・レジェンドの死が惜しまれる。
