Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Bill Suyker, Kenny Burrell, Barry Galbraith (guitar); Buddy Lucas (harmonica); Bob Ashton, Jack Agee, Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, Phil Woods (reeds); Ernie Royal, Gene Young, Joe Newman , Dick Williams (trumpet); Donald Corrado, Willie Ruff (French horn); Melba Liston, Quentin Jackson, Tom McIntosh, Britt Woodman (trombone); Don Butterfield (tuba); Bob Cranshaw (electric bass); Grady Tate (drums); Bobby Rosengarden (bongos, percussion). Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (06/14/1966). Arranger: Oliver Nelson. This mid-1960s release finds the influential jazz organist Jimmy Smith accompanied by Oliver Nelson's big band in an album of blues and soul-jazz that blends Smith's eclectic and entertaining style with Nelson's tight, dynamic arrangements. Down-and-dirty traditional blues such as "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Boom Boom" run back-to-back with Nelson's modernist arrangements on "Blues and the Abstract Truth" and the slow-burning "TNT," and Smith also contributes vocals on many tracks.

商品の紹介

One of Jimmy Smith's finest Verve recordings, this album is almost entirely centered around the title track, where Smith cuts loose on some raspy vocals and even raspier organ. Smith's organ work is indeed the stuff of legends, and this track bears proof. His intense, chromatic runs are positively spellbinding, and juxtaposed with the mighty band's kick (including Grady Tate on drums and Kenny Burrell's guitar) it's truly an awesome mixture of jazz and blues. John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" is amazing, as is Ray Charles' "One Mint Julep," where Smith's organ work reaches unheard-of levels. Truly a classic, this is one of the finest examples of both mid-'60s jazz and blues. ~ Matthew Greenwald
