Atreyu is usually categorized as a metalcore act, but the group's facility with melodic hooks on LEAD SAILS PAPER ANCHOR proves that they are not far removed from the pop-influenced punkster tradition of their native Orange, California as followed by bands like NOFX and the Offspring. The singalong choruses of "Honor," "Becoming the Bull," and "No One Cares" indicate that Atreyu might be just as suitable for radio play as headbanging. But don't relegate the band to the Top 40 yet, because Atreyu play harder and with more ferocity than ever on LEAD SAILS PAPER ANCHOR. Razor-sharp riffage, pummeling drums, and hair-raising screamo vocals are still Atreyu's stock in trade, and they unleash their sonic arsenal here with no mercy. The combination of memorable tunes with no-nonsense contemporary metal makes the album a keeper.
