This two-CD compilation gathers tracks from the early part of the trumpeter Chet Baker's career, both from his small group recordings with the pianist Russ Freeman and from his later sessions with a nonet string section. The early, all-instrumental pieces, which make up the bulk of this collection, have a rich, uncluttered sound that's nevertheless full of texture and variety, while the tracks cut with strings have a spare, occasionally haunting, autumnal quality.
