CALVIN JOHNSON AND THE SONS OF THE SOIL is K Records' answer to the 4AD Records supergroup This Mortal Coil. Johnson, founder of K Records and the former leader of Beat Happening, formed a band with K artist Jason Anderson and members of other bands associated with the label to record a collection of his own material as well as songs written and recorded by K acts like the Halo Benders and Johnson's own Dub Narcotic Sound System. The increased instrumental proficiency perhaps obscures the ramshackle charms of early K releases, but the album showcases what an underrated singer and songwriter Johnson is and has always been.
