Arrangers: Wade Marcus; Bob West . It's a big jump from the Miracles' "Shop Around" to Boyz II Men's "On Bended Knee," but that chronological and stylistic range is part of the appeal of MOTOWN NUMBER ONES, VOLUME 2. And, of course, there can be no criticism of the quality of the material here. Tucked between the Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" and Lionel Richie's "All Night Long (All Night)" are more classics than one can comprehend, including the Jackson Five's "ABC," Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," and a batch of funk/disco gems such as Diana Ross's "Upside Down" and Rick James's "Give It To Me Baby." While younger fans familiar only with contemporary Motown might find the Supremes and the Contours too old-school, and old-timers might think the more recent material too slick and polished, the compilation ultimately stands as a testament to the vitality and longevity of one of the all-time great pop labels.
