Originally released independently in 2003 on vinyl, the late J Dilla's RUFF DRAFT returns in 2007 as an expanded double album (the second disc is instrumentals) on Stones Throw. In hindsight, RUFF DRAFT clearly marks a pivotal point in Dilla's creative evolution, displaying a nascent interest in zooming early-hip-hop synthesizers and a plethora of soul loops and samples. These tendencies would come into full fruition in CHAMPION SOUND, his later collabo with Madlib, and in his 2006 masterpiece, DONUTS. J handles the rhymes (and some crooning) on most tracks, though Guilty Simpson makes an appearance, but it's the production wizardry that makes this album something special.

2003年、J Dilla自身によるレーベル”Mummy Records”から、当時アナログ・オンリーでリリースされた『Ruff Draft EP』が、未発表曲やインストを追加して遂に初CD化！2003年と言えば、Madlibとのユニット=Jaylibとしてのリリースを中心に、Four Tet「As Serious As Your Life」のリミックスといった傑作を生み出した年．．．そんな中でリリースされた本作は、イルになり始めた音使いと、よりハイファイになる出音が、JayDeeのターニングポイントとなった傑作『Welcome 2 Detroit』と、遺作『The Shining』のちょうど中間にあたるサウンドプロダクションで、J Dillaとしての変化の過程がしっかりと伺える重要作！「Reckless Driving」、「Nothing Like This」、「Make'em NV」といった代表曲を始め、注目の未発表曲には、「F**k The Police」ばりのドラムからなるスペイシーなトラックで、馴染みの深いアーティストにシャウトを送る「Shouts」未発表ヴァージョンといった、ファン垂涎の音源も収録！勿論、Disc2のインスト音源も初流出！これは絶対手に入れて欲しい！

アナログ・オンリーのリリースだった幻の名作『Ruff Draft EP』（2003年）が未発表曲やインストを追加してストーンズ・スロウからCD化!　ハイファイで緻密ながらも太く畳み掛けるディラ独特の魔法は当然健在で、さらに彼自身のラップを多くフィーチャーしていることで個々の楽曲はより生々しく響く。ラストに収録された馴染みのアーティストに対するシャウトをいま聴くと、逆に失った存在のデカさを痛感させられます。
