Swedish synth popsters Melody Club are pitched somewhere between the unapologetically sugary dance-pop of Annie or early Kylie Minogue (with just a dash of the ironic kitsch of the early Cardigans albums) and the rougher edges of new wave revivalists like Hot Hot Heat or the Epoxies. At Your Service, more so than the quartet's earlier albums, leans more toward the former than the latter, efficiently blasting through a dozen slices of bouncy bubblegum. Undeniably retro, with echoes of everyone from Vince Clarke-era Depeche Mode to the first couple of albums by the Magnetic Fields, Melody Club put together their tunes with such evident care for and enjoyment of the styles they're baldly ripping off that accusations of unoriginality utterly miss the point. Of course the songs sound familiar to anyone who grew up in the '80s: that's pretty much the whole idea. ~ Stewart Mason
