After a string of solid singles released on their own Random Acts of Vinyl label, Brighton, England's chamber pop duo Palm Springs make their full-length debut with the lush melancholy of No Hurt Like a Broken Heart. Nick Drake's Bryter Layter is the most obvious touchstone, although the pre-electronica albums by the High Llamas, the Pernice Brothers' Overcome by Happiness, major label-era Elliott Smith, and the elaborate cabaret glam of Rufus Wainwright (minus Wainwright's operatic vocals) come to mind as well. From the title on down, this long-gestating album (dedicated to Alice MacGill, an original member of the group who died in 2004) is suffused with sadness, all minor-key melodies and downcast lyrics delivered in D.C. Cane's wavering whisper of a voice. Just the song titles get the mood across: "I Am Dust," "The Broken," "There Is a Darkness." It's not meant as a complaint to say that any listener familiar with at least some of the artists and albums listed above will know exactly what No Hurt Like a Broken Heart sounds like, because this is a very well-made, frequently lovely iteration of the melancholy chamber pop form. But it still must be said that any fan of the style will have heard this all before. ~ Stewart Mason
