On 2007's Five Score and Seven Years Ago, the eagerly awaited follow-up to its '04 breakthrough album, MMHMM, Relient K unveils another assured and energetic set. Helmed by renowned producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Vendetta Red), the record presents the Ohio-based punk-pop act at its vibrant best, whether running through the sunny, piano-driven "Must Have Done Something Right" (which features a Beach Boys-like vocal interlude) or the moody, urgent "Forgiven." As on MMHMM, the group, fronted by amiable vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Matt Thiessen, hints at Christian themes without ever getting blatantly religious, keeping Relient K in that elite tier of CCM/mainstream crossover acts that also includes Switchfoot. ~ Eric Schneider
