Amid the swamp of albums claiming to add something new to the Marc Bolan legend, via undiscovered outtakes or assorted odds and sods, you would need to search far and wide to discover one that can top Bump 'N' Grind. The track listing may look familiar, but dig into the disc and the Bolan boogie has rarely enjoyed such an invigorating work-out, at least since Edsel concluded its excavation of the vaults. Comprising a random gathering of working versions, alternate mixes, and demos, the set opens with a five-minute run through "The Groover," a false start and extended conclusion joined by a previously unnoticed wah-wah guitar. Early renderings of "Jitterbug Love" and "Telegram Sam," an unedited take of "20th Century Boy," an undubbed "Metal Guru," and a sax heavy "Thunderwing" are the highlights of the album's nod to the "classic" era, before the album meanders off until as late as 1975 in its search for rich pickings.
Unlike a lot of similar collections, it's quality that counts -- an extended "Light of Love" that far improves on the familiar 45; a raw, rough mix of "Laser Love" packing a few new lyrics; an early version of "Dreamy Lady." And then it's back to the days of Bolanmania for "Children of the Revolution," extended out across a 12-minute window into the recording session, with Bolan as buoyant as he is brilliant, and some of his best ever guitar work screaming out of the jams. It is rare that a mish-mash of offcuts should be regarded as a genuinely classic album, but Bump 'N' Grind
fills all the criteria and more. ~ Dave Thompson
