Personnel: Albert Ayler (soprano & tenor saxophones); Niels Bronsted (piano); Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen (bass); Ronnie Gardiner (drums).
Recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark on January 14, 1963. Includes liner notes by Eric Wiedemann.
This historic session recorded in Copenhagen in 1963 may not be Albert Ayler's most significant recording, but it is a rare chance for fans to hear him at work with a bebop rhythm section. Ayler's avant-garde soloing is reminiscent of two of the more renowned saxophonists of his generation, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and especially Eric Dolphy. In contrast, bassist Niels Henning Orsted-Pedersen, pianist Niels Bronsted, and drummer Ronnie Gardiner play with a distinctively traditional bebop feel and harmonic sensibility.
However, the group finds congruence in Ayler's Sonny Rollins roots, as best evidenced by the Charlie Parker classic, "Billie's Bounce." On "Summertime," Ayler digs deep into the music, while with "On Green Dolphin Street," he explores the chord changes' tonal boundaries before proceeding to solo in a very free form style. Ayler's introduction, where he talks briefly about his musical history, is an added bonus.
