Tasty licks placed to the side, compilations have occasionally been accompanied by recipes; barbecue is by far the popular favorite. Of course, they don't change the quality of the music, and they often serve only to mask the unpleasant aroma of music that can't sell itself. The Sonar Kollektiv label has no such problem, however, so the concept has to be taken as a sincere desire to accompany some of its best music (selected by Jazzanova) along with recipes from the label's artists, friends, and acquaintances. As to the music, the disc has plenty of highlights -- clubjazz from Third Eye (aka Nicola Conte), contemporary neo-soul from SoulPhiction and Platnum, downbeat from Micatone and Georg Levin -- though not as many as Broad Casting, a contemporary SK compilation also mixed by Jazzanova. And as to the food, all of the recipes look appetizing, even Leon Ware's 20 Clove Garlic Chicken ("UUUMMMM!"). ~ John Bush
