The Atom Heart Mother-meets-Rick Wakeman of all techno tracks starts off innocently enough: sampled horns from an old Serbian gypsy record over an extended 808 percussion workout. Then about at the five-minute mark a passage resembling a clip from The Godfather if played by a drunken oompah band makes a quick appearance and then heads off to the pub for another pint. A few minutes later another erratic rhythm pattern makes an appearance before being swallowed by another filter and that same drunken Godfather horn passage. It moves along at a glacial pace, building up and tearing down again until the horns and reverbed percussion elements disintegrate and only the drum machines are left. And then the process starts all over again. But with all of its hypnotism and gradual build up, this has been in the box of every major DJ for a good portion of 2006 and with good reason, as crowds worldwide seem to relish in it. It may not be a reasonable thing for home listening and relaxation, but Villalobos has always been first and foremost about partying for extended periods of time. This could easily have been edited down to, say, even 15 minutes and could have brilliantly made its point. But when DJ sets now extend into the 12 hour stratosphere, it's good to have a record to pop on for a bathroom intermission, and this one does the trick. [The compact disc version also contains "Fizbeast," another 35 minutes of drum and percussive elements aimed at DJs to use as club tools] ~ Rob Theakston
