Personnel: Alasdair Roberts (vocals, acoustic guitar, dulcimer); Gareth Eggie (vocals, guitar, electric guitar, hand claps); Gerard Love (vocals, banjo, psaltery, synthesizer, bass guitar, hand claps); Tom Crossley (vocals, accordion, drums, percussion). Recording information: Ca Va, Glasgow, Scotland (06/2006). Photographer: Rikke Iversholt. Perhaps simple geography--he is from Scotland--separates Alasdair Roberts from the glut of his contemporaries also influenced by the late '60s British folk renaissance. The musicality of a Scottish accent goes a long way when floating over tried and true melodies. But the stirring THE AMBER GATHERERS--his fourth solo record--proves that Roberts is no fluke. With great songs and an able cast of supporting characters--offering loose jazz flourishes a la ASTRAL WEEKS--Roberts combines his penchant for various Fairport and Pentangle-isms with the rustic soul of Yanks like Will Oldham and Gillian Welch into something wholly original.

商品の紹介

Spin (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[D]elicate acoustic songcraft that shimmers like pebbles in the blue morning surf." Q (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Roberts's singular vision, quivering voice and offbeat guitar tunings shape their own strange, elemental world full of mystery and wonder." Uncut (p.80) - "Crisp, bright contemporary folk with a cheerier disposition than much of Roberts' other work..." The Wire (p.61) - "'Riddle Me This' is woven with such cunning from the threads of Scottish folk that it feels instantly familiar and nostalgic." CMJ (p.44) - "[He] weaves tales of kings, wars and distant seashores together in a meandering, highly literate style..." Dirty Linen (p.77) - "[E]xtremely evocative. His imagery, ranging from bellowing stags to an 'old man of the shells,' is timeless..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.95) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he whole album feels like some beguilingly beautiful charm against modern evils, with some of the sweetest sung songs you'll hear all year."
