Leroy Smart still awaits a definitive round-up of his myriad hits, but The Very Best of Leroy Smart bundles up quite a number, virtually all drawn from the '70s. The singer's breakout came with "Mother Liza" in 1973, and from that point on, Smart was unstoppable. "Shame & Pride" (aka his much loved and recycled "Pride & Ambition"), "Mirror Mirror," and the
eponymous "Mr. Smart" all swept up the chart. In their wake, the singer linked up with producer Bunny Lee, and unleashed a deluge of hits. Many of them were bundled onto the 1977 Superstar set, all of which is included here. Oddly, Lee left out one of Smart's biggest hits from this period, "Trying to Wreck My Life," but you'll find it on this compilation, along with a handful of other Lee productions like "Long Time Now" and "Jennifer." In 1976, Smart began working with the Hoo Kim brothers, who oversaw a further batch of crucial songs, including the seminal "Ballistic Affair." The following year, the singer began producing himself, with "No Love" amongst his own output. "Let Off Some" paired him with Prince Jammy, with the rest of the set given over to a handful of rarer numbers. Being weighted so heavily with Lee productions presents a rather skewed view of Smart's actual output, but the material is all high caliber, so few buyers will actually complain. The Hoo Kim material and his own productions are equally crucial, but much of it is thankfully available elsewhere. So, not the be all and end all, but an important edition to most fans' collections. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
