【内容】
イタリア歌劇場｢スカラ座」より委託された作品。1995年スカラ座で初演された。シリアスな作品が多いフイリップ・グラスがイタリアの絵本作家Beni Montresor(ベニ・モントレソール）の童話をもとにした子供向けのオペラ・バレエ作品”Ｔｈｅ　Witches of Venice"(ヴェニスの魔女たち）の音楽を担当した。「フィガロの結婚」を思わせる伝統的オペラ形式を用いながらもモンスター作品や妖精を生き生きと表現して、夢のあるファンタジー・ミュージックを作り上げている。
【物語】
ヴェニスの王とお妃から嫌われた少年は、気持ちがわかりあえる女友達を探して旅にでる。やがて自分が追われていることに気づいた彼は必死で逃げるうちに暗闇に迷い込む。そこではモンスターに出くわして恐ろしい思いもするが、最後にはさがしていた少女に出会う。[文面提供；(株)エルモ]
