This attractive double LP has the best 28 recordings that Sarah Vaughan cut for the Columbia label during 1949-53. On most of the selections (including memorable versions of "Black Coffee," "Just Friends," "I Cried for You," "Perdido" and "After Hours") the great singer is backed by fairly commercial orchestras. However there are eight jazz selections from May 18-19, 1950 that match her beautiful voice with an all-star octet that includes trumpeter Miles Davis, Budd Johnson on tenor, trombonist Benny Green and clarinetist Tony Scott. Of the latter performances, her versions of "It Might as Well Be Spring," "Mean to Me," "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and "Ain't Misbehavin'" are true classics. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
