Commissioned by the U.K. arts organization Artangel and released by the 4AD label, PLAGUE SONGS is a collection based on the 10 Biblical plagues that are recounted in the Book of Exodus. Not surprisingly, a number of high-profile performers that specialize in tales of woe appear here, including Scott Walker, Brian Eno, Robert Wyatt, Rufus Wainwright, and the Tiger Lilies. Among the many wonderfully morbid tunes on this compilation are King Creosote's shimmering, frog-filled "Relate the Tale", and "The Meaning of Lice"--Stephin Merritt's cheeky synth-pop ode to fleas, ticks, and other pesky insects. While PLAGUE SONGS will be of interest to fans of any of the aforementioned artists, it is also delightfully morose listening for anyone with a dark, brooding sensibility.|
