To a small but hardy fanbase, the Bongos were to Hoboken what the Beatles were to Liverpool. Fronted by McCartneyesque singer-songwriter Richard Barone, the band filtered British '60s pop and '70s glam (see the cover of T. Rex's "Mambo Sun") through a distinctly early-1980s powerpop/new wave sensibility. Their debut album, DRUMS ALONG THE HUDSON, remains their finest moment, bursting with youthful exuberance, irresistible hooks, and a touch of mystery via Barone's elliptical lyrics and atmospheric e-bow guitar lines.
