49年にも映画化され、そちらも名作の誉れ高いストーリーのリメイクを名作『インタープリター』の脚本、そして『ボビー・フィッシャーを探して』で初監督をつとめたザイリアンがオールスター・キャストのもと、実現。音楽は、組むことの多いジェームズ・ホーナーが担当。これが、意外なのは、今回のホーナー、キャッチーな展開、メロディながら重厚、というパターンで攻めるオーケストラ・サウンド。ホーナーというよりも、ゴールドスミスかブライアン・タイラーか、という豪快さもあり。とにかく、ここ数作のホーナーものの中でメロディが明快。ちょっと60年代～70年代中盤までのスコアの香りもする。おすすめ。 (C)馬場敏裕
