his sprawling 17-song set was written, produced, sung, and performed by former Cardinal and beloved orchestral popster Eric Matthews. If the whole thing seems a little claustrophobic that was probably the idea. Lyrically, Matthews explores some dark places in his psyche, and his omnipresence on every track makes it all the more personal. Even the vocals--drenched in echo like a slightly more accessible Scott Walker--are front and center, creating a direct emotional experience between singer and listener. The songs themselves are vintage Matthews: tunefully mid-tempo and carefully orchestrated, swerving from melodrama ("Our House") to bouncy '60s kitsch ("All the Clowns") to pure pop giddiness ("Sorry").|
