Recorded in 1963, ALL BY MYSELF is one of jazz vocalist Sue Raney's most confident early efforts. Bolstered by a brassy, big band sound and bold, swinging arrangements by Ralph Carmichael, the album is a throwback to the 1940s, with Raney clearly influenced by Ella Fitzgerald. But the smoldering chic that carries through much of the set, especially on lush ballads like "Trouble Is a Man" and "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," feels timeless. Raney's finely nuanced phrasing and sweet timbre are in excellent form too, making ALL BY MYSELF a treat from start to finish.
